Conceptual design you can’t teach

Concept is king ?

I’ve always been a proponent of conceptual design – and am good at it.

And you can guess my surprise when I first spotted the post on a LinkedIn alert, on the face of its title.

But sadly it’s art and not design, two completely different things. And I have high respect for those that can do this but, it’s not design.

And one thing I have heard and seen a lot, people that could draw like Leonardo, but couldn’t design.

One example of we met during HOK/Nortel experience, this young fellow, we were all young then, did what I termed performance art. In a concept meeting here in at Ottawa office, this fellow sketched on a flip board in the full meeting room, concept on demand of all the architects and designers in the room ??he wasn’t doing the concept but was an interpretation-machine. Never seen anything like it ever or since, not that the scenario is scenario is commonly repeated.

And again, he was a machine not the generator of concept.

I’ve ALWAYS said, concept is king. But you can’t teach this.
